A Room With A View fue una banda de cuatro chavales de Madrid que estuvieron activos durante 6 años aproximadamente (entre 1997 y 2003). El recuerdo que se tiene de ellos, de sus directos completamente fuera de lo común y de las canciones que dejaron escritas y grabadas, choca con frecuencia con la esperanza que se había depositado en su futuro: Conrado, David, Jose y David, se separaron cuando podían haberse convertido en uno de los grupos más importantes, no solo de la escena nacional, sino de la escena independiente internacional. Su manera de hacer las cosas, su compromiso con su música, sus principios, su discurso y su actitud alejada de todo protagonismo, no han sido igualados por ninguna de las bandas españolas que vinieron después. Quizás se trate de uno de esos casos donde todo encaja sin querer. El paso de los años ha confirmado lo que solo se intuía cuando estaba ocurriendo: que A Room With A View eran (casi) perfectos.
Surgidos a la sombra de la escena hardcore/punk madrileña de los años 90 pero con un catálogo de intereses y conocimientos más eclécticos y profundos que los que mostraba la media –el jazz, la electrónica o el crust–, A Room With A View destacaron desde el primer momento por los motivos correctos: no había otra banda parecida en cientos de kilómetros a la redonda. Eran tan extraños y especiales que nadie acertaba a asignarles una escena o unas influencias concretas: se habló de post-rock, se habló mucho de emo, se habló de Codeine, de Karate, de Tortoise, de post-hardcore, de Slint. Y sin duda había algo de todo aquello en su sonido y en su estética, pero el puzzle jamás podría completarse mirando hacia fuera: había que mirar sobre todo hacia dentro. Era la época de los fanzines en papel, de los flyers fotocopiados, de las primeras direcciones de email y donde las redes sociales no existían todavía ni en la imaginación de los más soñadores. Esto, sumado a que siempre consiguieron (¿lo harían a propósito?) pasar por debajo del radar incluso de la prensa especializada, condenó a A Room With A View a ser un grupo para minorías entregadas. El mejor grupo para minorías entregadas junto con Aina, sus amigos de Barcelona, que jamás haya existido en España. Con todo y con eso, justo al final de su trayectoria, A Room With A View formaron parte del cartel de festivales como el Primavera Sound y el FIB de Benicàssim, ambos en el año 2003. Es difícil no pensar en qué hubiera pasado con ellos de haber seguido tocando unos años más.
A Room With A View was a band formed by four kids from Madrid that was active for roughly six years (from 1997 to 2003). What they are remembered for, their totally unusual live shows and the songs they left written and recorded, frequently clashes with the hopes that were bestowed upon their future: Conrado, David, Jose and David broke up when they could have become one of the most important bands not only in the Spanish scene, but in the international independent arena. Their way of doing things, their commitment to music, their principles, their statement and their attitude, refusing to be center stage, have not been equaled by any of the Spanish bands that came later. Maybe it is one of those instances where everything fits by coincidence. The passing of time has confirmed what was only an intuition back in the day: A Room With A View was a (almost) perfect band.
Born under the cloak of Madrid’s hardcore/punk scene of the 90’s but equipped with a much more eclectic and deep catalogue of interests and knowledge –jazz, electronica or crust– than the average, A Room With A View stood out from day one for the right reasons: there was not a band remotely like them in hundreds of miles around. They were so strange and special that no one was able to pin them down on a particular scene or set of influences: post-rock was discussed, and the term emo was used a lot, Codeine, Karate, Tortoise, post-hardcore and Slint were mentioned. And undoubtedly, there was a bit of all that in their sound and their esthetics, but the puzzle could never be completed by only looking outside: first and foremost, we must look inside. It was a time of paper fanzines, xeroxed flyers and the earliest e-mail addresses, a time when even the boldest of dreamers could not foresee Internet networking. All that, plus the fact that they always succeeded (did they do it on purpose?) in flying under the radar of even the specialized press, condemned A Room With A View to be a band for a devoted minority. Together with Aina, their friends from Barcelona, the best band for devoted minorities ever to come out of Spain. Even so, in the final days of their journey, A Room With A View were part of the roster of festivals such as Primavera Sound and Benicàssim’s FIB, both in 2003. It is difficult not to think what would have happened to them if they had carried on playing a few more years.

Addiction of Duplicities se editó originalmente en el sello propiedad de la banda, Heart In Hand Records, en 1999. Cualquier persona con experiencia a la hora de escuchar discos jamás diría que se trataba de su disco de debut. Estas 8 canciones componen una fotografía ajustada de lo que era el grupo en ese momento: intensos, inteligentes, esquivos, complicados, superdotados rítmicamente (David al bajo y el otro David a la batería) e inspirados melódicamente. La dinámica ruido-silencio funcionaba igual de bien que la de calma-tormenta. No importaba que las letras ni tan siquiera fueran letras sino frases encontradas en algún lugar y depositadas por alguna razón dentro de las canciones. Nadie hacía preguntas.
Los conciertos que siguieron a la edición de Addiction of Duplicities otorgaron a A Room With A View el prestigio que les acompañó hasta su disolución y que les ha sobrevivido desde entonces: no tenían rival sobre el escenario. Sin poses, sin panfletos, sin polémicas: llegaban, montaban, daban un concierto inaudito y se marchaban.
Tres momentos claves en este primer álbum: el ritmo sinuoso y siempre hacia arriba de “Curtains”, el acercamiento al pop oscuro y técnico de “Drowning Spaces” y todo lo que se intuye en “The Minute Before”, que termina como si aquí no hubiera pasado nada y lo que ha pasado es, precisamente, todo.
Este doble vinilo contiene, además de 4 canciones que se incluyeron en recopilatorios hace años agotados que fueron editados en 1998 y 1999 (destaca “You Say” por su virulencia y su batería), y 3 canciones pertenecientes a un lanzamiento compartido con otras bandas de la escena hardcore, diferentes en sonido pero iguales en discurso, como Manifesto y Hopeful, una canción completamente inédita a la que convenientemente llamaron “A Pop Song” por su nula correspondencia con el género pero que de pronto puede recordar a The Cure (una asociación que no es nueva y que se leía con cierta frecuencia en los fanzines y catálogos de venta por correo de aquella época). Esta grabación por sí sola, rescatada de un casette que tenía Jose en su poder y donde se puede escuchar perfectamente el desgaste y los doblados de la cinta, justifica la edición y la compra de estos 400 gramos de plástico y papel gordo que representan la primera época de A Room With A View, marcada por la actividad, la búsqueda y el constante diálogo instrumental.
Addiction of Duplicities was originally released in 1999 by the band’s own label, Heart In Hand Records. It would have been impossible for any seasoned record listener to guess it was their debut album. These 8 songs are a perfect photograph of what the band was at the time: intense, smart, elusive, complicated, rhythmically highly gifted (David on bass and the other David on drums) and melodically inspired. The noisesilence dynamics worked as finely as the calm-storm ones. It didn’t matter that the lyrics were hardly lyrics at all but random lines found somewhere and placed for some reason into the songs. No one made questions.
The shows that followed the release of Addiction of Duplicities granted A Room With A View a fame that would follow them until they broke up and that has survived them: on stage, they had no rival. No posturing, no pamphlets, no controversies: they came in, set up, did an astounding show and then left.
Three key moments of this first record: the winding and always upwards rhythm of “Curtains”, the dark and technical pop approach of “Drowning Spaces” and all that is sensed in “The Minute Before”, a song that ends as if nothing has happened when, actually, everything has.
This double vinyl edition contains, besides the 4 songs that originally appeared in long out of print compilations released in 1998 and 1999 (“You Say” stands out for its virulence and its drums) and 3 more songs from a split record with other bands, diverse in sound but sharing the same ethos, from the hardcore scene such as Manifesto and Hopeful, a previously unreleased song fittingly titled “A Pop Song” which, although lacking any kind of connection to the genre, can at times bring The Cure into mind (an association that has been done before and that could be frequently read in fanzines and mail order lists back in the day). This cut alone, rescued from a cassette tape that Jose kept and with a sound that shows the wear and tear and the folding of the tape, perfectly justifies the release and purchase of these 400 grams of plastic and thick cardboard that represent the early years of A Room With A View, a period marked by activity, search and continuous instrumental dialogue.

Jupiter & Beyond fue un disco que no todo el mundo entendió, pero que hoy se muestra ante el oyente como un trabajo infinito, contemporáneo y genial. También fue un disco despiadado: abrió tantos caminos posibles que los diferentes gustos musicales de cada uno acabaron por separarles definitivamente. Consiguieron crear un desequilibrio atractivo y personal. Editado en 2002 por Recordings From The Other Side, Jupiter & Beyond se grabó en Madrid y fue producido por Karim Burkhalter y la propia la banda. Así como algunos grupos se caracterizan por mantener cierta linealidad en su discografía, sin demasiados sobresaltos y midiendo cada paso con cuidado y frialdad, los madrileños no pasaban demasiado tiempo en el mismo sitio. Esto quedaría patente en las 9 canciones que conforman este segundo álbum, donde consiguieron dejar atrás todos los referentes que trataban de encasillarlos y se convirtieron en su propia fuente de inspiración: nada de lo que suena en estas canciones recuerda a nada de lo que hubieran hecho antes y tampoco a nada que nadie hubiera hecho antes. Corrieron el riesgo de que algo a lo que debiera aspirar cualquier creador generara en su público una sensación de desorientación, pérdida y desasosiego. Pero salieron ganando.
El inicio con “Júpiter” y “Aislado” podía equivocar: su concreción, su ritmo y su pegada no tienen reflejo en el resto de canciones, muchos más ambientales y cambiantes. El diálogo instrumental que establecieron en su primera época deja paso aquí a un discurso basado en la tensión, en la repetición y en la experimentación. Ocurren muchas cosas a la vez en Jupiter & Beyond y no todas se asimilan en las primeras escuchas. Su control de los instrumentos se convirtió en inalcanzable. Después de grabar este disco, A Room With A View no volverían a pisar un estudio como banda. Además de 3 canciones (“Sun”, “Obedece” y “Pegamento”) extraídas de las pistas de audio del DVD que documentó la última actuación de la historia del grupo el 27 de septiembre de 2003 en Madrid, y de la improvisación “TMA- 1”, previamente publicada en el recopilatorio Viajes editado en 2000, este doble vinilo también recoge 3 canciones inéditas y sin nombre grabadas en la sala Siroco de Madrid, la que ellos consideraban su casa, en dos conciertos diferentes de 2001 y 2003. Estas grabaciones demuestran que el apetito de Conrado, David, Jose y David, no tenía límites y enseñan tres gestos diferentes de un mismo rostro: el camino extraño y semi-electrónico de “Untitled I”; los restos de canción que se adivinan en “Untitled II” y la deriva experimental de “Untitled III”. Un camino todavía por construir que quedó interrumpido para siempre por una disolución que nunca tuvo arreglo y que no tiene pinta de tenerlo en un futuro.
Jupiter & Beyond was not understood by everyone at the time, but today it reveals itself as an infinite, contemporary and brilliant piece of work. It is a ruthless record too: it opened such a variety of roads to take that the differences in taste among the band members would eventually lead to the definitive split. They succeeded in creating an attractive and personal imbalance. Released in 2002 by Recordings From The Other Side, Jupiter & Beyond was recorded in Madrid and was produced by Karim Burkhalter and the band itself. While some bands prefer to maintain a certain linear quality in their discographies, leaving frights aside and coldly measuring every step they take, the band from Madrid never stood still in the same place for long. This became clear in the 9 songs included in this, their second album, where they left behind any chance to be pigeonholed and became their own source of inspiration: no sound included in these songs recalls anything they or, for that matter, anyone else did before. They did what every artist should aspire to do, thus taking the risk to create feelings of confusion, loss and unease among their fans. But they triumphed.
The opening salvo, with “Júpiter” and “Aislado”, is misguiding: their precision, rhythm and punch have no continuity in the rest of songs, that are much more ambient-like and meandering. The instrumental dialogues they established in their first period becomes here a statement based on tension, repetition and experimentation. Lots of things are happening simultaneously in Jupiter & Beyond, and not all of them are bound to be assimilated in the first few listens. Their control over their instruments became unreachable. After the recording of this album, A Room With A View would never again enter a studio as a band. Besides the 3 songs (“Sun”, “Obedece” and “Pegamento”) culled from the audio tracks of the DVD covering the last ever live appearance of the band on the 27th of September, 2003 in Madrid and the jam TMA-1, previously released as part of the Viajes compilation, released in 2000, this double vinyl set also includes 3 previously unreleased and unnamed songs recorded at Siroco, in Madrid, a venue they considered their home, in two different performances from 2001 and 2003. These recordings show that Conrado, David, Jose and David’s appetite had no limits and picture three different gestures of the same face: the weird and semi-electronic path of “Untitled I”; the remains of a song that can be made out of “Untitled II” and the experimental drift of “Untitled III”. A brand new road whose construction was for ever interrupted by a split that could never be mended and which doesn’t seem likely it will mended in the future.
